Abstract
The Humboldt Bay Recreation and Conservation District (HBHRCD) along with the City of Eureka proposed to dredge along the Eureka Waterfront to maintain adequate water depths of eleven existing berthing sites for water craft. Mad River Biologists determined that these dredging activities would permanently impact eelgrass beds along the Eureka Waterfront. Recognized as Environmentally Sensitive Habitat Areas, these eelgrass beds are protected under the California Coastal Act. In August of 2005, an eelgrass mitigation and monitoring plan was established. This document presents the first-year monitoring report for the eelgrass mitigation implemented as part of the Humboldt Bay Maintenance Dredging Project.
