Abstract
The Buhne Point Shoreline Erosion Demonstration Project was conducted by the County of Humboldt, the California Department of Boating and Waterways, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers under the authority of the State Resources Agency and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).
Buhne Point is located in Humboldt Bay, Humboldt County, California directly across from the entrance channel jetties. Buhne Point spit was a manmade sand spit that eroded due primarily to ocean wave action from the Bay entrance channel. Due to the sand spit erosion the homes, roads, and utilities of King Salmon were threatened by wave damage, flooding during high winds, and wave action during high tides.
The purpose of the Buhne Point Shoreline Erosion Demonstration Project was to protect Buhne Drive from further erosion and damage due to winter storms. The project restored Buhne Spit to its historic 1955 shoreline with re-used dredged materials and protective structures (timber groin and rubble) to maintain the configuration. The project was constructed in four phases and included a monitoring program.
