Abstract
Humboldt Bay is California's second-largest estuary and supports ecologically, commercially, and culturally important resources, yet comprehensive habitat mapping had not been updated for decades. This presentation outlines the planning, acquisition and classification of high resolution aerial imagery collected during optimal low-tide windows, resulting in a comprehensive dataset, which became the foundation of intertidal habitat classification published in the following report:Humboldt Bay Eel River Estuary Benthic Habitat Project (Schlosser & Eicher, 2012). The imagery and habitat products have since been widely utilized by federal, state, local, and academic organizations to support resource management, habitat restoration, invasive species monitoring, and scientific research. The classified habitat spatial data can be found in the Humboldt Wetland Restoration & Mitigation geodatabase as the feature class titled “benthic habitat NOAA 2009”.
