    Episode Description

G: ...but first when I checked in a little while ago with Julia Butterfly, she informed me that she couldn’t join us live today. She is very, very busy now. But luckily enough, I did get a few minutes to talk to her at 12:30, so why don’t you listen in right now, to our conversation.

G: Well, I just found out that Julia Butterfly will not be able to join us live as usual, on the Homepage today, but luckily, I caught her in time before a couple of important phone calls. Julia what are you going to be talking about while we are on the radio here?

J: Actually, I am spending time over the phone, the California Legislature today, in Sacramento. I am talking with them because we are getting close to the deadline of appropriations within the budget. I am calling for, asking them that they not allow appropriations for the Headwaters forest agreement to go through in this fiscal budget. What I am telling them is that this is not a true agreement what they are proposing to do is more of a deal. That was made, behind close doors, between the people with the most to gain at the expense of the forests and the local communities whose quality of life is at stake in this deal. I am asking them to set aside appropriations for a complete and total new, true agreement. That involves, from the ground floor up, the forest and the voices of the people who are going to be most effected, right from the very beginning. That we include a panel of scientist, independent scientist, of environmentalist and of the local communities, from step one and that public hearings and comment periods be included at every single step, instead of waiting till the very end, after the final agreement has been approved and then placing it for public and peer review. I feel that this is an incredible and viable solution to the deal, that will not only safeguard the sustainability of the forest, but will also safeguard the quality of the local commentates, including the sustainability of their economies.
