Abstract

This thesis is a beginning of appraisal of programs in Humboldt county designed to facilitate the adjustment of adult Southeast Asian Lao-Hmong refugees to the host culture and Humboldt County community, examined from the perspective of social psychology and application of Naomi Golan's ( 1981) strategies for transitions of persons who have experienced radical changes in their life structure. The assessment focuses on the purpose and methods of assistance, and the difficulties and successes encountered in aiding the Hmong in their adjustment to American culture, from the viewpoint of the assistance programs. Because this is an initial endeavor, it is hoped that other studies will be conducted as new programs expand and existing programs change and/or withdraw, and that additional studies will examine the programs from the perspective of the Hmong.
