Abstract
This thesis is a cultural study of the history, community, and ethnic identity of the village New Glarus in southern Wisconsin. It discusses the use of culture to promote tourism, an approach which allows the town to survive economically when so many farming and dairy communities are dying out. It examines how the participation in tourism has created solidarity and cultural pride amongst the people of the town. My objective is to document and analyze the creation and development of this community and to establish the variables that have enabled New Glarus to remain a relatively homogeneous ethnic community for so long. To do so requires taking into account the ethnic and national loyalties of the people.
