Abstract
Ecosystem management demands that the United States Forest Service (U.S.F.S.) include historically excluded viewpoints in managing the forest. This project explored the use of facilitation, by a third party, to help the U.S.F.S. and interested public citizens cooperatively work together as ecosystem management plans were finalized in the Pilot Creek Drainage in Six Rivers National Forest. The objective of this project was to aid both the U.S.F.S. and the public in making new cooperative/ collaborative relationships for ecosystem management. This objective was carried out by establishing "information exchange” meetings between historical adversaries, the U.S.F.S. and prominent environmental activists. This project concludes having improved communication between the U.S.F.S. and activists from which future working relationships can be built. The Pilot Creek project has just begun, therefore formal evaluations of success are impractical at this time. Within the next few years, when U.S.F.S. plans are implemented, we will know if the first brick, made of trust, in the collaborative relationship has been laid.
