Abstract
The break-up of couple relationships is becoming an increasingly common life event. Weiss (1975) claims that among married couples, a period of separation is a common rather than an exceptional experience. "If we assume that the rate of separation in the future will be the same as it is now, it is a safe prediction that about half (somewhere between 45 and 60 percent) of American marriages now made will at some point sustain a separation” < 1> (1975:11). Glick and Norton (1979) suggest that the current frequency of divorce is causing it to be seen as an almost normal stage of adult life. It is clear that the high incidence of couple break-ups make it a phenomenon worthy of study by the social sciences. Also, individual experience in couple break-ups certainly warrants examination since breaking up involves much emotional turmoil and brings about major life change. It is likely that individuals going through break-ups, as well as professionals attempting to help them, seek information on this experience.
