Abstract
A recurrent complaint in the social sciences is that many sociological concepts are "distressingly vague" (Blumer 1954:5)s and that their "definitional state is far from sanguine" (Freilich 1964:183). Entrenched in the current vocabulary by their frequent and rather indiscriminate use are terms such as social structures institution, norm, culture, role and class'. These and many other loosely formulated concepts often have become little more than popular catch-words whose meanings are assumed to be either self-evident or of common knowledge. An explicitly-stated and precise definition, as well as a consistent use of a concept, is all too frequently an exception to the rule.
