Abstract
The music of Ludwig van Beethoven (177O-1827 ) mirrored the social turmoil of his day, but it also reflected his own deepest personal triumphs and tragedies. His art was a product of the social, economic, and political reality of the turbulent times in which he lived, but it was also the product of his individual mental processes and the face to face reality of the situations that he encountered in the course of his life. The aim of the sociology of Beethoven is to distinguish and isolate the creative style of Beethoven’s thinking and relate this to the conditions which spawned his creativity. Our discussion will focus on both the larger socio-historic milieu within which Beethoven lived, and on the more specific personal and interactional situations he experienced during his lifetime.
