Abstract
For many years, the siting of a Multiple Assistance Center (MAC) for the homeless in the Eureka area has been a contentious issue. Public outcry has prevented service providers and government representatives from siting a MAC thus far. This project has been an attempt to reduce and answer public opposition by allowing the community to participate in the siting process. By allowing their concerns to be heard and addressed via public meetings and written forms, the objective criteria for the MAC and its location was created. Next, again through meetings and mailings, all members of the community had the opportunity to nominate and evaluate potential MAC sites. This list of nominations was then submitted to a site review committee, which eliminated inappropriate sites. Remaining sites are currently subject to negotiation with property owners and neighbors. Ultimately, the final site will be chosen by the Eureka City Council and the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors. My role in this process has been to assist in the organization of information and meetings as well as to facilitate meetings and negotiations.
