Abstract

This model studies the effects of race, class and self-esteem on the development of juvenile delinquency. Factors of labeling effects, socio-economic status, and family composition were examined, and appear to correspond to involvement in delinquent behavior or the perception of possible delinquent behavior by others. Data was collected by using a content analysis of juvenile court files, a self-report survey administered to one hundred and ninety-five juveniles (involved and not involved in the system) from five different schools, interviews with juveniles and with administrators from the juvenile justice system. Another method of data collection was observer-as-participant interaction with juveniles and adults in the community. Data obtained was both quantitative as well as qualitative and these results indicated a measurable effect of low self-efficacy, minority racial status, and lower SES on the frequency of involvement in the juvenile justice system.
