Abstract

A heronry located on a small island in northwestern Costa Rica was studied over a period of 29 months to determine nesting chronology, density, clutch size, hatching success and patterns of habitat utilization in six species of waterbirds. These are the first breeding records for Cattle Egrets (Bubulcus ibis) and White Ibises (Eudocimus albus) in Costa Rica, and the second for Roseate Spoonbills (Ajaia ajaja). Mortality factors and the need for protective measures are discussed .
