Abstract
This study documents vegetation changes on coastal dunes between Mad River and Little River, Humboldt County, California, from 1969 to 1990. Vegetation was sampled using a three-step successive refinement approach. After reconnaissance, a stratified random sampling design was used to locate 250 circular plots. Plant cover was estimated by species. Agglomerative hierarchical cluster analysis and divisive hierarchical two-way indicator species analysis (TWINSPAN) was used to document vegetation pattern. The resulting dendrograms and plots by species matrices allowed for a classification and description of the vegetation types.
