Abstract
In 1964, a doctoral dissertation was written on the subject of maternal employment in relation to the structural state of anomie. The present study has attempted to duplicate the essential material to determine if the hypothesis presented would hold up under further investigation. Essentially, the hypothesis proposed was "employment is seen as a purposeful and ordered alternative for women to the state of anomie." The definition of anomie was taken from the concept developed by Merton, and more particularly, Durkheim as a state existent in the structure of a society; the normless situation that develops when there are no values by which one's behavior would be guided.
