Abstract

Much of the current literature defending or attacking the introduction of multicultural education into the curriculum has centered on the debate around competing ideologies. By staying within these ideological parameters the debate has failed to address the more important underpinnings of the debate. This thesis seeks to review in depth the literature addressing the debate on multicultural education and suggest that the central underpinning is the contested power to produce, control, and legitimate knowledge. Furthermore, it will try to show that a second important underpinning of the debate is the connection between legitimate knowledge and the unequal distribution of resources and power. Results from this review and analysis indicate that these are important underpinnings that need to be addressed in the debate on multicultural education. This thesis concludes that addressing these underpinnings and their connections to the debate on multicultural education has helped develop a greater awareness of the social inequalities of class and race in American society. Out of this awareness has grown iv a trend that seeks to reduce these inequalities by embracing a revitalization of the public sphere that nourishes democracy.
