Abstract

Historical resources for the native people in Trinity County, California, have not been gathered, organized, or utilized in the past for educational purposes. Therefore, students in Trinity County have almost certainly been learning the history of Indians from areas other than Trinity County. Students educated in Trinity County schools need to be informed about the cultures and histories of Trinity County natives. The traditions and lifestyle of one Trinity County tribe, the Tsnungwe, who have also been called the Trinity, Trinity River, Southern Hupa, Keita, Helwe, and South Fork Indians, are the focus of this project. Resources have been located relative to the Tsnungwe, organized into a study unit, and the unit has been classroom tested in local schools. The unit focuses on a universal human issue: conflict. It is not designed to have students come to any final conclusions about conflict. This is a thematic, literaturebased unit designed to utilize educational methods that provide opportunities for students to discuss conflict, ii critically evaluate literature, work cooperatively on interdisciplinary projects, practice process writing, learn from tribal and community elders, practice a native language and cultural values, and most importantly to be validated and empowered as students. The Saxey Story and Study Unit have been tested in local schools and have been very effective. It is recommended that similar study units be created for the Wintu and Chimariko people of Trinity County since at least three distinct tribal groups have made Trinity County their home.
