Abstract

Attrition in all forms of therapy is a challenge however treatment programs for men who batter face special concerns. Recent studies indicate that 60% to 80% of men who complete treatment programs are no longer physically abusive toward their partners. The purpose of this study was to examine factors associated with high attrition rate in treatment programs for men who batter. It was expected that previously researched demographic and attitudinal variables would predict attrition. Twelve predictor variables were selected from a series of intake documents completed by all subjects before acceptance into the program. Fifty-nine archival records from a private counseling practice with a cognitive behavioral psycho educational treatment approach were used in this research. Eleven demographic and one attitudinal variable were subjected to a crosstabulation analysis. One demographic and the attitudinal variable were found to be positively and significantly correlated with completion of the program.
