Abstract
Since the early 1950s there has been an ever-expanding emphasis on the use of community mental health services by psychiatrists and other mental health professionals. The advent of psychotropic medications—anti-hallucinogenic drugs— made possible the maintenance of individuals in their home communities, freeing these persons from state mental hospitals. In 1950, 405 out of every 100,000 persons in the United States were confined to mental institutions; by 1970, only 214 persons per 100,000 population were in mental hospitals (Kramer, 1977:3).
