Abstract

This thesis has much practical significance in that it develops a group plan to strengthen individuals, families and communities. It also develops an evaluation plan to study the effectiveness of the group. This research could contribute to our general understanding of the application of social theories that pertain to change, community, groups, families, individuals and interaction. My first objective is to define the problem by inquiring into the nature of social change. The definition of the problem is that society has grown larger and more dense therefore we have more individualism and breakdown of community which has resulted in high social problems such as crime, violence, divorce, unemployment, juvenile delinquency, alcohol and drug abuse, anomie, etc. My second objective is to use my sociological imagination to design a social structure that could lead to liberating and adaptive social change for families. With this thesis I design an imaginary social model self-help support group program called How-To-Family that could be used world-wide. This group is designed to create a "community of memory" and act as a vehicle for liberating and adaptive social change for families. iv My third objective is to use my sociological imagination to design an imaginary evaluation plan to study family members as they improve their "quality of life” within themselves, their families and their communities as they participate in How To Family. The methodology I used for writing this thesis was a qualitative literature review. The conclusion I reached is that parents today have multiple roles and identities and individualism, family and community are all important to parents today. How To Family is needed to help parents to become strong individuals who are capable of being committed meaningfully to their families and to their communities. The recommendation is that How To Family should be implemented as soon as possible.
