Abstract
In the past twenty years the reported cases of incest in this country have risen to an alarming rate. Incest is defined as when any person who willfully and lewdly commits any lewd or lascivious act, with the intent of arousing, appealing to, or gratifying the lust or passions or sexual desires of a child or person who is too closely related to marry (California Dept. of Justice, Child Abuse, Section 288) . In some parts of the nation the reported incest cases have risen over two hundred per cent. In 1976 the Department of Public Welfare’s incest caseload of 16,000 (up 2,2.38 from 1975). Henry Giarretto, the director of the Child Sexual Abuse Treatment Center in Santa Clara County, California, estimates that the annual caseload nationwide will be 25,000 for 1982.
