Abstract
Of all the diverse areas that communication scholars investigate, perhaps none is as important as organizational communication. The process of communication--the flow of information--is the basis for the proper functioning of an organization; decisions are made by management and subordinates which must be carried out using all of the communicative abilities humans have at their disposal. Lacking these abilities, humans would be helpless in forming and running organizations. Many theorists have spoken about how communication is part of the nature of the social system of the organization. Katz and Kahn (1966) wrote: “Communication—the exchange of information and the transmission of meaning—is the very essence of a social system of an organization” (p. 223). This thesis reports an organizational communication study. Specifically, this research deals with task information networks in a hospital. As an introduction to the notion of “network,” I will summarize an interesting study by Milgram.
