Abstract

This thesis is a comparative historical study of successful anti-colonial revolutions. The idea is to determine what shared social conditions in these revolutions contributed to their success. The thesis includes an extensive review of the literature on revolutions, as well as a section devoted to defining the term ‘revolution’ as it will be used. A detailed method of analysis for the cases is offered and an application of the process is presented following a section devoted to the relevant history of each selected case. The broad themes, for analysis are then presented and analyzed in depth to determine whether or not they are relevant to each selected case. Finally the thesis concludes with a discussion of why some conditions occurred in all the cases and why others only occurred in certain instances. The final section includes a discussion of the relevance of the data and offers suggestions for further studies.
