Abstract

Research concerning listening has suggested that good listening habits can be taught, are important to the learner, and should therefore be developed through instruction. Gains at various levels have been noted in this chapter. The experiment presented in this paper arose from my curiousity about the effects of listening training in*the early grades. Besides considering earlier findings, it seemed a sound idea to begin at the beginning. Because I recognized the value of listening to both students and adults, I undertook a project and then a study to assemble some listening activities and then to determine how effective planned instruction in listening comprehension was at the earliest level. This experiment was necessarily limited in its scope and geared for use in the primary grades.
