Abstract
This study will provide a brief excursion into the area of sociological theory. The underlying assumption guiding it, although nowhere explicitly stated, is that scientific theory is not a means of determining ‘the truth,1 but rather a method of ordering data so that underlying similarities between seemingly disparate events become evident.This assumption includes also the notion that theory determines ‘facts1 as much as facts de- 2 termine theory. The reciprocal relationship between theoretical perspective and data will become apparent when perspectives are compared.
