Abstract
The Child Development Lab at Cal Poly Humboldt is the client for a team of four Mechanical and Energy Systems Engineering students in the Engr205 Introduction to Design course, who set out to design a multipurpose light table for children ages 2 to 5. The client required a safe, durable, and accessible table with diffuse RGB lighting, accessible controls, and rounded corners, to be built within a $400 SHIFT grant budget. The team compared four alternatives that paired 3D-printed drawers or wooden cubbies with bottom- or side-mounted light strips, and selected wooden cubbies with a bottom-mounted light strip for their durability and appearance.
