Abstract

CCAT, an organization run by students at Cal Poly Humboldt that prioritizes appropriate technology, needed its campus pond restored and protected. Students in the spring 2024 Introduction to Design class (ENGR 205) were tasked with preventing theft of the pond's aeration system and solar panel and with making the pond healthier and more pleasing to the eye. The team designed a solar-powered aeration pump that feeds a waterfall to limit algae and support plant growth. The finished pond includes the waterfall, a rock berm, coco fiber, hidden pond liner, and underwater shelves, with the solar panel bolted to the CCAT overhang. An initial pump could not pull water into the system, and a check valve and reservoir did not fix it, so the team moved the pump into the pond, where it draws water through an intake with a filter.
