CCAT rainwater catchment model
Abstract
The Campus Center for Appropriate Technology (CCAT), a student-run community organization at Cal Poly Humboldt, taught students and community members about appropriate technologies. CCAT's rainwater harvesting systems were large and installed in fixed locations, which made it hard for students to explain each component to visitors at tabling events. In Spring 2024, the ENGR 205 team of Jocelyn Biedler, Ethan Trojanowski, Jonathan Hicks, and Aiya Tobin designed and built a scaled-down, portable rainwater catchment model. The team incorporated a modified CCAT greenhouse, cut in half and fitted with new plexiglass, along with a 3D printed gutter, a filter, a first flush, and a cistern connected by 1/4 in tubing. Testing introduced water into the system to observe how it flowed through each component, and the finished model was built to be carried to CCAT's tabling events.
