Zane Middle School sundial
Abstract
Catherine Zane Middle School in Eureka, California, partnered with the Cal Poly Humboldt Engineering Design course to turn an underused mulch area at the front of the school into a learning space. Students had no interactive way to learn how the sun, Earth, and time relate. Team Division by Zero built an analemmatic sundial in a 9-by-10-foot cement platform, where students stand as the gnomon and read solar time from their shadows. The team made plywood stamps to press the numerals, month names, and standing positions into the poured cement. The project is listed as deployed, cost USD 112.44 in materials, and took 227 team hours.
