Abstract

The client, the Trinity Learning Center's Child Development Lab, works with children ages 2 to 5 who have a wide range of special needs. The client asked a Cal Poly Humboldt Engr205 Introduction to Design team to design two portable augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) boards with symbols that the board verbalizes. The client's constraints included a neutral color theme, a carrying handle, rechargeable power, weather resistance, and a cost under $300 per unit, and the boards were to function as tools rather than toys. The team compared four alternative designs, including a banana slug-shaped board and two rectangular designs in wood and plastic. The page is a work in progress and does not report a completed build, test results, or final cost.
