Abstract
Understanding behaviors is key to working with individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities who are displaying difficult and potentially dangerous behaviors. The purpose of this project is to design a training that outlines different behavioral methods to working with individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities with behavioral needs. I developed a training to help educate the Family Home Providers at a local agency with a mission to serve people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The literature review describes how individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities are too often victimized and that most negative behaviors in this population can be attributed past traumas that may be linked to victimization. Knowing that these individuals' behaviors more than likely stem from past or current life traumas, behavioral interventions based on methods that avoid punishment and are tailored towards individual needs are vital to supporting and caring for them.
