Abstract

This is a rhetorical analysis of John F. Kennedy’s speech at Rice University given on September 12th, 1962. This speech was chosen because of its cultural and temporal significance, and it has been analyzed in a myriad of ways according to the surrounding texts within the COMM 300 framework. The paper contains a synopsis of the rhetorical situation at the time, as well as an analysis of the speech using the 5 canons, symbolic convergence theory, and visual perspectives. Kennedy’s speech is deconstructed, and his juxtaposition of pride and careful optimism is studied intently below. In addition, Kennedy’s argument surrounding difficulty being an innate motivator and his calls for the American people to unite as one are looked at through the historical context they fall under as well as the societal ideals they seek to undermine.
