Abstract

The Rou Dalagurr Food Sovereignty Lab, a hands-on cultural, educational, and research space at Cal Poly Humboldt focused on Indigenous control of traditional food and cultural practices, needed a composting system to make effective compost for growing food. Students in the Fall 2026 Engr205 Introduction to Design class were tasked with designing, building, and testing a composting system with modular bins and easy access for the volunteer and staff who run composting for the lab. The constraints called for three separate bins in the 3-9 square foot range, natural materials only, no concrete, durability in the elements, and a budget of about $350.
