About HJM
Humboldt Journal of Microbiology (HJM) is a peer-reviewed scientific journal that publishes original research in microbiology conducted at Cal Poly Humboldt. The journal’s primary aim is to engage undergraduate students in the scientific publication process, offering a unique opportunity to contribute to the broader scientific community. HJM features novel research in areas such as basic microbiology, applied microbiology, microbial genetics, microbial ecology and microbial bioinformatics. Most of our studies investigate microbial systems within Humboldt County, leveraging its unique location, biodiversity and climate. The journal welcomes submissions from class-based projects (BIOL412, 433), independent and directed research (BIOL499) and honors theses (BIOL490). All manuscripts undergo rigorous peer and editorial reviews prior to acceptance. Published articles are freely accessible online through the Cal Poly Humboldt Library and are also available in print. Beyond its pedagogical mission, HJM is dedicated to disseminating scientific discoveries originating at Humboldt, fostering a connection between local research and the global scientific community.
