About the Rou Dalagurr Food Sovereignty Lab and Traditional Ecological Knowledges Institute
The Native American Studies (NAS) Department’s Rou Dalagurr Food Sovereignty Lab and Traditional Ecological Knowledges Institute (FSL) at Cal Poly Humboldt was established in 2019 by an NAS class, led by Dr. Cutcha Risling Baldy, which asked the regional tribal community how the institution can best serve them. From public forums and interviews came an innovative, cutting edge laboratory that sits at the nexus of Indigenous science, the tribal community, and the university. The FSL is guided by a Steering Committee with representatives of regional tribes, and tribal-facing organizations. The FSL foregrounds Indigenous voices in academic research, publications, and community-centered programming, connecting youth to higher education, policy development, and climate resiliency.
