Submission guidelines


Selection criteria

Your submission will be anonymously evaluated on the following criteria by at least three HSU faculty, staff and students from across the disciplines.

  1. Strong connection to personal experience or academic coursework or place
  2. Clear focus and organization
  3. Demonstrates critical understanding and critical thinking about Invention of Nature
  4. Engaging and high quality of writing

Submission requirements

  1. The text must be 2,000-5,000 words in length
  2. The text must include a descriptive title.
  3. All references must have full attribution (Chicago style is preferred but not required).
  4. You must own copyright to the text or be authorized by the copyright holder to submit the text.
  5. The text cannot infringe on any copyright, violate any proprietary rights, contain any libelous matter, nor invade the privacy of any person or third party.
  6. The text cannot have been previously published, nor be forthcoming through another publisher (print or electronic). Please note that "published" in a working-paper series, in a classroom, or on a blog or personal website does not constitute prior publication.
  7. The Author(s) shall indemnify and hold Publisher harmless against loss or expenses arising from breach of the above requirements.

Please note that editorial revisions must be satisfactorily completed in entirety by designated deadlines for submissions to be published.

If the submission is accepted for publication, Humboldt State University Press reserves first North American publishing rights, and non-exclusive rights to reproduce, display, and distribute the work in print, online, or other media platforms in perpetuity. Author(s) grant Humboldt State University Press the right to use the Author's name(s) for advertising and promotional materials in association with the publication.

The publication will be hosted as a freely available online text at Digital Commons @ Humboldt State University under an Attribution-NonCommercial CC BY-NC Creative Commons license. Print rights return to the Author(s) after first publication. Until publication by Humboldt State University Press, personal-use exceptions are granted to all contributors, as described below.

Any use or adaptation of the manuscript must clearly identify the Author(s) as creator and Humboldt State University Press as Publisher. Reproduction, posting, transmission or other distribution or use of the material or any material therein, in any medium, outside the use allowed by the Creative Commons license will require signed written permission by the Author(s).

Personal-use Exceptions

The following uses are always permitted to the author(s) and do not require further permission from Digital Commons @ Humboldt State University provided the author does not alter the format or content of the works, including the copyright notification:

  • Storage and back-up of the work on the author's computer(s) and digital media (e.g., diskettes, back-up servers, Zip disks, etc.), provided that the work stored on these computers and media is not readily accessible by persons other than the author(s);
  • Posting of the work on the author(s) personal website, provided that the website is non-commercial;
  • Posting of the work on the internet as part of a non-commercial open access institutional repository or other non-commercial open access publication site affiliated with the author(s)'s place of employment; and
  • Posting of the work on a non-commercial course website for a course being taught by the author at the university or college employing the author.

General Terms and Conditions of Use

Users of the Digital Commons @ Humboldt State University website and/or software agree not to misuse the Digital Commons @ Humboldt State University service or software in any way. The failure of Humboldt State University Press and Digital Commons @ Humboldt State University to exercise or enforce any right or provision in the policies or the Submission Agreement does not constitute a waiver of such right or provision. If any term of the Submission Agreement or these policies is found to be invalid, the parties nevertheless agree that the court should endeavor to give effect to the parties' intentions as reflected in the provision, and the other provisions of the Submission Agreement and these policies remain in full force and effect. These policies and the Submission Agreement constitute the entire agreement among Humboldt State University Press, Digital Commons @ Humboldt State University and the Author(s) regarding submission of the work.
