Abstract

Thomas Edison created the light bulb over two hundred and thirty years ago. Still today there are over a billion people that do not have access to reliable electricity. This paper looks at what can be done to help these people disconnected from the utility grid. Creating the infrastructure to connect remote locations and villages to the electric grid is expensive and unrealistic. How can organizations work together to make this possible? Renewable resources, such as solar power, are a much more efficient manner to help provide electricity. This will not be easy, as there are many barriers standing in the way of electrifying people living in off-grid locations. The task is too big for a single person or organization. Various organizations need to engage and work together towards sustainable change in the system. Different organizations have different strengths and connections, and by aligning themselves they can make change and bring about sustainability. New organizational forms are developing form to fill in niche needs that are overlooked by established organizations to benefit society.
