Abstract
This qualitative study examined the goal setting techniques of successful collegiate women's basketball coaches. The purpose of this study was to describe the goal setting strategies of successful basketball coaches and to determine if they support the current goal setting theories in the sports field. Ten (1 Division I, 5 Division II, and 4 Division III) coaches from each division of the National Collegiate Athletic Association were interviewed during their pre, mid, and post 1998/99 basketball season. The interviews were conducted by phone and were tape recorded for accuracy purposes. Constant comparison was used to analyze the interview data. Results were congruent with current goal setting theories in that coaches showed similarities in establishing long term goals team, short term goals team, individual goals and in the way these goals were monitored.
