Abstract
The purpose of the project was to assess supportive rural community spaces for future LGBTQ+ peer-led support groups. The project was based on a transformational research framework, and utilized partnership a local LGBTQ+ grassroots community group in rural northern California. Collaboration with the LGBTQ+ grassroots group included an interview with the coordinator, which was used to shape questions to ask community organizations. Interview questions were modified to address aspects of the space that might be relevant for future LGBTQ+ peer-led support group settings. The goal was to find organizations who would be supportive of hosting future LGBTQ+ meetings. Rural organizations of the county were phone screened and if there was interest, an in-person interview assessing aspects of the space was conducted. Overall, four sites in the rural parts of Northern California were assessed for LGBTQ+ supportiveness. The details of renting the space, as well as other themes such as the privacy, the current activities of the organization, the discrimination policy and training, the inclusiveness of the organizational culture, and accessibility/restroom space were discussed with each community organization.
