Abstract
There has been an increase in community violence in rural northern California. In this region, many individuals seem to think that gangs are not an issue. However, there has been an increase in crime related to criminal street gangs in rural communities. School staff and administrators can play a key role in gang prevention and intervention. The purpose of this study is to focus on rural northern California school districts to examine educational staff and their awareness of criminal street gang activity. The relationship between educational staff and their awareness of street gang activity is demonstrated through survey data. The survey data was collected and analyzed, and then results were presented to school faculties and a Gang Risk Intervention Program coordinator. The study works to support the implementation of training for local educational agencies related to gang awareness, prevention, and intervention.
